That, among other things, cost Gray Davis the governorship. He was recalled and Arnold Schwarzenegger elected.
The campain was called "total recall". Sacramento, home of the Governator.

That being said, I'm not sure we can call the mess similar. Ways back when, the political issue was about supply.
