Actually, it doesn't - practical experience on a medium sized corporate 
network is that the firewall protects perfectly against TCP/IP worms - 
right up to the first time some senior management bozo plugs his laptop 
onto the network that his teen son was playing online games with all 
last night... and has no effect at all on email or website/browser 'sploits.
