Purpose:
Responsible for daily management and operations of the Office of Telecommunications Services (OTS), which supports Wide Area Network (WAN) connectivity for the 15 University of Texas System institutions, along with other entities.
Essential Functions:
Plans, organizes, schedules and participates in OTS operational activities and projects in support of the UT System. Establishes standards and procedures for work assignments. Reviews work. Evaluates employee performance and provides for training. Develops backups for critical staff functions. Establishes, enforces and reports metrics to monitor service delivery. Implement/enforce/document architectures and systems developed with technical staff. Enforce maintenance of equipment and configuration records. Ensure fiscally responsible network designs. Maintains budget. Negotiates and manages vendor relationships. Consult with, seek guidance from and support UT System institutions and governance committees. Work with staff and senior leadership to develop and recommend policies. Work collaboratively and collegially with other R and E network organizations, leveraging shared state resources to deliver best value to the System and the state as a whole. Reports to senior leadership on the progress of work seeking new priorities and projects. Coordinates activities with institutions ensures their needs are being met.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree. Four years of experience in WAN operations. Two years of network experience with large WANs. Two years supervisory experience. Thorough knowledge of networking and network management. Excellent personal time management, project management and communication skills. Exacting accuracy and follow through required in all phases of work. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree. Four or more years experience supervising/managing large WAN operations. Experience in large academic environments coordinating with autonomous institutions securing mutually beneficial outcomes. Experience managing large multi-million dollar projects. Thorough knowledge and use of networking technologies including: TCP/IP, BGP, MPLS, VLANs, Ethernet switches, routers, DWDM, fiber systems. Extensive experience with Juniper and Cisco network products. Experience with standard office productivity software environments.
