Port 43 Whois Announcement

This isn't nonsense. Its a necessary part of having multiple registrars. This whois is used to avoid namespace collisions between registrars, as well as find the appropriate registrar for a domain.
My question (should just test I suppose) is if the rwhois client will automatically query the delegated whois server for the rest of the information. Now that might be useful...
