How many ASs are out there?

Are all these "active"? I know sometimes in this business that mergers
and other consolidations cause one company or organization to "fold"
more than one autonomous system into a single autonomous system. Is
there any way to trace which AS #'s are dormant, retired, no longer in
use, etc.?
Or is this basically unknowable?

Well it looks like they (ARIN) are up to about 11554. This AS was
the last
created (Friday 10-1) according to the ARIN ASN database accessible
from
"whois".

Subject: How many ASs are out there?
Hi,
Can anyone tell me how many AS are as October of 1998. I know
there were around 700 registered ASs in the Internet at the
beginning of 1994. [pag 178 of Huitema-93]
Is there a web page with that Information?
Thanks,
Alejandro
